Liver Disease Screening FAQs

Why have I been sent this text? I feel well

Certain conditions (such as high blood pressure, viral hepatitis and raised body mass index) may have no symptoms. We now know that certain conditions such as these are a risk factor of developing liver problems. We are therefore offering a screening blood test to certain groups of patients who have risk factors for possibly developing liver disease.

No one has ever told me I have a liver problem?                                                                                                                                                                                                      The blood test being offered is a screening test for selected patients who have an increased risk of liver disease. The aim of screening is to detect and diagnose a condition early to allow for earlier treatments and prevent future complication.

What if I don’t want to do this blood test?

This blood test is a simple non-invasive test looking for potential liver disease. It is your right not to have the test if you do not want it. You are under no obligation to have the blood test. However, it should be noted that screening for liver disease and detecting it early could improve the ability to treat it.

What do I need to do?

You will already have received a text with a blood test form attached and another text with instructions (by using a QR code) of how to arrange a blood test appointment. Please kindly print the blood form (if you are unable to do this the reception team at your GP practice will be able to assist with printing the form). Once you have printed the form, please use the QR code to arrange an appointment (if you are unable to do this the reception team at your GP practice will be able to assist with this). For ease the QR code is also appended below (please follow the instructions which will guide you on how to arrange a blood test). You do not need to fast before the blood test i.e. you can eat and drink normally before the blood test.

Do I need to discuss this with my GP?

Your GP is aware that you are being invited for this screening blood test. There is no need for you to discuss this with your GP. An email is appended below for any questions you may have if not already answered. Once you have had your blood test, we will send you the result by text and advise you if any further tests or investigations are needed. You do not need to make an appointment to get the results from your GP unless we advise you to do so.
